What's all this then?
Above is a link to Groot's annual mixen, with a page for new folks to explain what's what. Mostly the links up top are all you need.
Presumably if you got here, you got the link from Groot or a friend of Groot's. Either way, welcome!
Where do I start?
See tl;dr above, and pick a year that sounds interesting. Or just pick the most recent mix. Or pick a mix or retromix because you like the cover. You do you!
Wait, these are zip files? In 202X? What the heck do I do with these? LOUD NOISES*!
* no, really, the above link also explains why the quotes may play VERY LOUD in Apple Music.
This seems like a lot of work for just a music mix.
Oh, you have no idea.
So...what's the deal?
I started making these back in 1995 - a mix of music and random movie/tv/etc. quotes that amused me at the time. On tape. That was a pain in the @$$.
Over the years, they have moved from tapes to CDs to purely digital, and have gotten both more streamlined and more complex, sometimes with subtle and not-so-subtle linkages and stories embedded in the quotes and songs that mostly no one but Groot gets. Or cares about, probably.
Do people actually listen to these?
Probably! I have a (surprisingly large) email list of friends and family on the (usually) annual email for the mix. I know that there is a core group that seems to really enjoy them, and that is more than enough for me.
If you would like to be on the annual email, ping Groot. Or feel free to come back here around January and there will usually be at least one new mix. Sometimes more!
But I don't like <INSERT ARTIST/QUOTE SOURCE HERE>!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I mostly make these for myself (and, increasingly over the years, my family) to represent the year, and I have very broad tastes in music. You probably won't like everything.
But if anyone ever finds one new song or artist on a mix that they love, then that makes me very happy.
Why haven't you included <INSERT ARTIST/SONG HERE>?!
Probably because I haven't heard them/it! Please send music suggestions to me! One of the best things about making these mixes is that they keep my musical tastes alive and changing. Each year I end up with a playlist of 100+ possible songs, many that are suggestions from all y'all. Even if they don't make the mix, I love hearing them and finding new music.
Can I send you my mix?
Dear lord please yes! See the previous note!
What is a 'mixen'? What is a 'retromixen'? What the does HARDCORE mean? WHAT IN THE WIDE, WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS IS GOING ON HERE?!
Did you just read all of the...never mind. Click the links, and all will become clear. ...no? Then I got nothin'.
Wait, who are you?
I am Groot.
Your mixes are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Just drop me a note and I'll add you.
Wait, you actually have a newsletter? In 202X?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is usually just one email a year, +/- Retromixen and pandemics. And kids' graduations. And, you know, because I get bored.
And how do I get in touch with you?
Some people have a way with email, and others...not have way. (Hint: mixen@ the obvious domain name will probably get to the right place.)
Are we groot?
Yes. Yes we are.
